Healthcare assistant

Healthcare assistants (HCAs) support clinicians with their daily work and carry out the following tasks:

  • Assisting the GP with implant and coil fittings or removals
  • Blood pressure measurement
  • Electrocardiograms (ECGs)
  • Health checks
  • Height and weight measurements
  • Influenza vaccinations
  • New patient checks
  • Pneumococcal vaccinations
  • Smoking cessation advice
  • Spirometry
  • Urinalysis (for urine infections or cystitis)

HCAs may also act as a chaperone when a patient or clinician requests one.
